One of my students created a
survey that gathers data about ballet classes, attendance, and
preferences. If you have a few minutes to answer a few short questions,
that would be wonderful and very, very helpful!
You do not need to be one of my current or former students, nor must you live in this area to participate. Many of the questions are general and speak to how and why adults take ballet class (or in some cases, don't).

Halloween-themed classes on Tuesday 10/30 and Wednesday 10/31, with fun
music and homemade treats. All other classes will be held as usual.

Week's end roundup: Halloween pics, Nutcracker shirts and a Technique Tip!
'Tis the holiday season! First up, Halloween!
If you didn't make it to class, I hope you spent it trick-or-treating with the kids or being a good neighbor and handing out treats. Here are a few photos of what you might have missed on Monday night:
First of all, chocolate cookies shaped like cats!

And finally, a technique tip to end your week: Get dirty!
That's right - don't be afraid to get your tights dirty (or your socks or your legs) when you:
--hold your leg in retire. Be sure to press the toe right into the knee and lock it in there. If you keep your toe separate from your knee, and it sort of hovers next to the leg instead, you end up hiking the hip instead of maintaining the natural turnout.
--perform pique turns in passe. Again, press the toe into the back of the knee and hold it there for a split second longer than you think. Don't be in a rush to get the foot back down to the ground.
--practice battu at the barre. You want to return the foot to the ankle each and every time you do frappe, rather than let it hover an inch or two above it. And in petit battements, keep the working foot that is in coup de pied very close to the support leg. Try not to circle front to back but instead, form a V-shaped action in the air.
--do rond de jambe en l'air in center or at barre. Your toe will quickly dab at the inner knee when you do this correctly. If you don't actually touch the support knee, that means you are circling the knee improperly, more like a can-can dancer, and that is physically bad for your knee joint.
When you do all of the above, you might end up with pink tights spotted with dirt from your shoes and that's okay. You might even end up with some light bruising if you're wearing pointe shoes or dance sneakers. That's less okay but not unusual! Just be sure to actually make contact when you're performing the above exercises or else you will be hiking your hip and engaging your quadriceps too much.

From Page to Stage!
It feels like it's been a million years since I wrote the opening lines to my novel, Sweet Sorrow:
The whisper blew a
chill across her cheek. It tickled her eyelashes and curled around the delicate
pink shell of her ear. The voice of her beloved echoed in her head, calling her
name, and despite her best efforts to reach out to
him, her body remained stubbornly rigid.
And now it's a ballet and Nancy Evans Dance Theatre will be putting on the first half of it in less than two weeks! I can hardly believe how far it's come and how beautiful it's shaping up to be, even in its more grotesque moments (remember, there are zombies!).
When you write a novel, you have no idea where it will end up: in a bookstore or online, most likely, or just stuck on your hard drive. It's unlikely you think it will be a ballet! Except that's how it all began, with a phrase I used in my ballet class about six years ago. Costumes, lighting, bottles of potions and even a crypt! Who could have guessed when I tossed a short but intense adagio into a Halloween ballet class that it would evolve the way it has?
The most exciting part for me has been to see how excited other people get when they talk about it or hear about it. Dancers have been overwhelmingly positive; friends and family have been extraordinarily supportive; and I've had the luxury of collaborating with Nancy and her dancers, who have shared their gifts with me as I develop the story.
For the next week and a half, I'm not going to plug the show relentlessly nor will I bombard people with emails entreating them to SEE THE SHOW! And DONATE IF YOU CAN! lol...beyond today, of course.
Here's the link to the crowdfunding campaign. This is the last week of it, just a few more days. If you can donate, that's awesome. If you can share the link, that's awesome too. As you can see we've raised 1/3 of the funds, which is still amazing - and we thank every single person who has donated or shared. You are all fantastic people and I wish/hope that you can also see the show come to fruition!

Zombie ballet!
Ever wonder what zombies would look like if they danced ballet? Well, here you go! I gave this short dance to my adult students for Halloween and one of them had an iPhone so we recorded it. I am seriously considering including it in a larger work as a dream sequence.
