Extra fun!

Did someone say Outdoor Class? Julie Paige, the owner of Inspire Dance Studio, has set up two outdoor "studios" in her back parking lot. Weather permitting, I am offering Saturday open level class 12-1PM, limit 6 students. Masks must be worn and distance maintained. No walk-ins; you must sign up online. Because of Julie's Nutcracker performance, the next available time for class is Saturday,December 26. Fingers crossed our beautiful weather holds!

Psst...Are you on Instagram? Every Wednesday around 11:30AM, I do a 5-10 minute "Ballet Break". Join me for some gentle stretches, plies and tendus to get us up and away from our desks. And on Thursdays, I always do a bit of choreography!

Company Member Spotlights!
Last month I shared a new feature from the company YouTube channel: Company Spotlights created by Alexes Ciardi. The newest one is an interview with company member Rae Aaselund, below.  Be sure to subscribe to our channel to see more in the series!

Spotlight on Rae Aaselund

And....the big project is a short film! Because we couldn't perform our annual "Sweet Sorrow, A Zombie Ballet," we produced a short version of it! Rehearsed over Zoom, we filmed outdoors in Griffith Park with a cast of 14 dancers in masks and socially-distanced. Filmed and edited by Rawl Paredes, we are so pleased to present this to you. May 2020 Newsletter

May 2020 schedule

Studio classes are currently suspended while the state is in lockdown until mid-May. You better believe I will shout from the rooftops to let you know when we're allowed back in! In the meantime, please join me every morning at 11AM PST for Your Daily Barre with Leigh, live via YouTube. Each morning I broadcast an hour-long barre+center free of charge. The video is posted on my channel for 24 hours so you can "take" it later if you miss it live. After a day, it becomes unlisted and the next day's video goes up in its place. Here is the schedule:
Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday - beginner level
Monday, Wednesday & Friday - intermediate level
Saturday - beg/int level with pointe/pre-pointe exercises
Donations, if you have the means, or use of your class cards is greatly appreciated.

If you would like access to ALL of the videos, you can pay a monthly subscription of $50. This will allow you to view every video from the current and previous months whenever you want! (e.g. pay for May and get May and April) Please subscribe or donate via my website.

Want more ballet?
Private or group lessons held via Zoom are a great way to get personal feedback and corrections. Contact me to schedule a special class just for you.

Even more ballet: POINTE AT HOME!
Weekly Pointe class is held on Zoom every Saturday at 12:15PM for one hour. Fee is $12. Each week we work on barre exercises and some center phrases, including adagio. Dancers should have a sturdy barre or barre-substitute, as well as a non-slick surface. Please contact me if you are interested!

Home studios across the miles!
One positive aspect of the lockdown is the opportunity to connect with dancers I haven't seen in a long time! Last week you saw a home studio photo of Jenny Holland who moved to Chicago. This week I'm happy to feature photos from Ingrid Jackel (below left) and Jennifer Shermer (below right).

Meet some new students!
Say hello to the home studios of three fabulous dancers: Cyla Fisk (below left), Vivian Garcia (below right), and Victoria Chalk (home studio at top of the page). Cyla and Vivian are both first-year members of Leigh Purtill Ballet Company and Victoria is in her first year of ballet.

This month I was grateful to meet Washington DC-based dance physical therapist, Dr. Danelle Dickson. I hosted her in a live chat via Zoom and some of the LPBC company members joined in to ask questions. Dr. Dee was candid in her comments and thoughtful in her advice. I wish she lived on the West Coast! She is also tremendously generous at this time, offering loads of free advice and addressing so many issues! Take a peek at the video of the chat and read more about her in my blog post.

LPBC News

The Company will not be performing in its typical fashion for the remainder of 2020 but will postpone its traditional theatrical performance of Sweet Sorrow, A Zombie Ballet until Fall 2021. Our planned fundraiser will also be postponed. Instead we will be exploring new and unusual ways to bring you our ballets and showcase our dancers. Could it be a video watch party with a live chat? Maybe! Could it be a virtual immersive event at a SPOOKY location? Maybe! If you know our company, you know we are a creative bunch and we're always looking for FABULOUS ideas to bring ballet to EVERYONE!

Speaking of everyone...we had our first virtual company class a couple of weeks ago and 33 of our beautiful dancers made it. Needless to say, I miss them all so much. Thanks to Avery for this photo which she took while she was sheltering-in-place in Florida!

New class, Valentine's Day, and more in the February newsletter!

February 2020 schedule

Classes are all on as usual throughout the entire month. Reminder: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday classes are at Inspire Dance Studio; Tuesday classes are at Live Arts LA. View my full schedule here (scroll to bottom of page).

SPECIAL CLASS! This year, Valentine's Day falls on a Friday but I will be holding a "Bring-Your-Special-Friend/Partner/Significant Other" class on WEDNESDAY, FEB 12th! This class was SO much fun last year! Non-traditional music with a simple barre and floor work that anyone can do. If you have a friend who has always wanted to try ballet but was nervous, bring them to this one!

Special notes

Starting tomorrow, February 2, (Groundhog Day AND Super Bowl Sunday!) I will be teaching a NEW CLASS on Sundays: Advanced Beginner Ballet (which is the same level as my Tuesday/Thursday classes) at Inspire Dance Studio. 11AM-12:30PM. ALSO: please contact me if you would like to see a 30 minute pointe class following. I will need to have a fairly consistent group in order to put it on the schedule.

Featured technique tip!

Many of you have already seen this article in Slate magazine but if you haven't, it's worth a read with your morning coffee. A woman writes about how much starting ballet at age 62 has affected her life. If you know anything about me and my personal philosophy about dance, you know how much I believe in ballet for our mental and physical health and our connection to others as we age.

LPBC News

Did you feel all g-r-o-o-v-y when you saw that photo at the top of the newsletter? That's LPBC company members April McLeod, Omaira Galarza and Annett Bone in a piece I choreographed that they will be performing at NACHMO on Sunday, February 9 at the Broadwater Main Stage in Hollywood. Show tickets are just $12 in advance here. Annett will be performing in a second piece on Sunday and Jackie Nii, another returning company member, will perform in the Saturday show. Come see them and all the wonderful local dancers.

Halloween in February? That's right! HauntX is a DIY Haunters convention at the Pomona Fairplex on February 22-23. Our company will have a booth to promote our shows in October and our fundraiser on April 18th. BONUS! Our zombies will be doing some flash mob performances throughout the weekend.

Below...Introducing our 2020 Company Members! This year we have 47 talented dancers in the company and I could not be more thrilled to be working with them all. We've got shows, a fundraiser, and lots of cool community outreach planned for the season. (This photo is missing a few members: Rae Aaselund, Marla Bleavins, Patricia Ho, Stephanie Kuga, Linda Le Verne, Corey McCullough, Jackie Nii, Elizabeth Risha)

My first monthly newsletter!

Hello all and welcome to December!

I hate getting a ton of emails, especially when the good ones get swamped by the spam. So rather than send you all a bunch of my super awesome and informative emails about class changes and workshops, etc. I decided I would start a monthly newsletter!

In it, I will let you know about any changes to my classes, my schedule, my locations, etc. as well as links to cool things like pirouette tips or fun shows, my recent blog posts or even my book reviews for Dance Advantage. I'll also include brief company updates in case you are in the company or want to know more about it.

You can subscribe or unsubscribe at any time! I know that not everyone likes newsletters but I find it much easier to keep things all in one place rather than a whole bunch of emails that I send to the trash and then have to go searching for.

Here's the link on the web.

Featured technique tip!

We could all use some tips on turns! Here is one that speaks to the UNDERARMS, an oft-neglected area of the body.  Underarm pirouettes!

The company will have a final meeting on December 7 at Inspire from 1-2PM. Mark your calendars: Our Intention for the 2020 season will be on Sunday, January 12, 12PM. Everyone is welcome to participate if they would like to be part of the company's 4th season. More information to come!

Many thanks to all of you who attended our show in October! We had over 600 guests and we performed in a beautiful new theater, the Manoukian Performing Arts Center. For those of you who missed it, the photos featured here (courtesy of Raul Paredes) are the newest characters in "Sweet Sorrow, A Zombie Ballet": Werewolves (Celia Green and Omaira Galarza), Their Innocent Victim (Kavita Master), and Benvolio (Bill Reiss)!

What's new on the blog?

My company, Leigh Purtill Ballet Company, recently started rehearsals for our upcoming show, SWEET SORROW, A ZOMBIE BALLET, which will be performed on October 20 and 21 this year, at the Lanterman Auditorium in La Canada.

So far we've gotten a great head start on the Funeral entrance and opening dance, the Witches, Romeo & Juliet's pas de deux, and a brand new piece, the Spiders! They are elegant and frightening. I'm so excited to be doing new material for this show!

Here are a couple of shots of Holly (Juliet) and Bill (Romeo) working on the pas yesterday. I'll post more pics/stills from rehearsals as I get them.

I've posted a separate calendar below my teaching schedule at the bottom of this page which will include all the rehearsals for the company. (If I could figure it out, I would integrate all of my calendars but I am not that tech-savvy!) As rehearsals are added or changed, this calendar will also be updated so if you are a member of the company or someone who is excited about the show, you can check the calendar for updates.

What else is new?

I'll be subbing for Carol Guidry on a couple of upcoming Thursdays, June 21st and July 5th, at Studio A on Hyperion Avenue in Silverlake, at 10:15AM. The class level is comparable to my Advanced Beginner class, maybe a little more Intermediate than usual. Cost is $15, cash only, please, no class cards, since I have to do my bookkeeping with the studio directly. Hope you can make it if you have those mornings available!

Happy dancing~

Using a Crissy doll as a model for pulling up (& my holiday schedule!)

Hello beautiful dancers!

If you're not of my generation, you probably have never heard of a Crissy doll. She was a red-headed toy, about a foot high, with a button in the center of her body that, when pressed, allowed you to lengthen her hair from the top of her head. A knob at the back would retract it. This is what she looked like:

So why am I mentioning a forty year old doll? And by the way, I had more than one of these dolls as a kid. I kept cutting her hair off and expecting it would always be replaced, as if she had a never-ending supply of hair in her tiny body.

Many times when I ask dancers to pull up, they hunch their shoulders up to their ears or they expand their rib cages. It can be a difficult concept to grasp and sometimes you need a visual image. Some common images are:

--Press your belly button to the back of your spine
--Imagine the top of your hip bones connected to the bottom of your rib cage
--Drop your tailbone as if it were weighted down

To this list, I add the Crissy doll:

Imagine yourself as a Crissy doll with a button in the center of your stomach and hair that can be pulled from the top of your head.

Picture that button being pressed in and your spine being pulled up through the top of your head like Crissy's long red hair.
center of Crissy's doll's stomach

It can be helpful to place yourself within that doll's stiff body. Crissy wasn't a soft-bodied doll like a Raggedy Ann or Cabbage Patch Kid. Instead, she was like a large Barbie: plastic with a soft head. I don't want you to always be stiff and unyielding but it can be a good visual aid when you find your center sagging.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE REMINDER: All of my classes are as usual through the end of the year, except NO CLASS on Christmas Day. I will be using holiday music for my classes from 12/18-12/23 if you want some fun non-traditional music to dance to. I am also thinking of holding an open-level class at 10:30AM on New Year's Day to start 2018 with a fun morning of ballet. Email me if you are interested so I can reserve the studio!

Happy dancing and Happy holidays!
